Q&A
We’ve already looked at the choice of materials and temperature adjustment. Let’s see what else needs to be considered when selecting a curling iron.
Shape
There are many shapes of irons, some even a bit wacky! The two most popular ones are cylindrical and conical irons. A cylindrical iron allows for curling every strand uniformly, the same width from root to end. A conical iron provides a less refined, more “beachy” look.
Diameter
The width of the barrel will have a big impact on the type of curl created. The narrower the diameter, the more the curl will be bouncy and tight. A wide diameter will give a supple effect.
Hair length is important to consider when determining the proper diameter. As a general rule, short hair requires a narrower barrel. However, if your long hair tends to fall down quickly, a smaller barrel may also be right for you. Throughout the day, the strands will loosen for a long-lasting hold.
Automatic or not?
For beginners, an automatic iron is ideal because the tool does all the work. For more control over curl thickness and shape, a classic iron is the way to go.
Marcel, with clip or clipless?
Professionals and other experts appreciate the Marcel-type models for their versatility and control during use. However, the absence of a spring makes these tools harder to handle for the average person.
Irons with a clip are designed to hold the strand in place, but also to optimize each curl’s definition.
Clipless irons allow for easily and quickly rolling the strands around the barrel. This technique provides less definition and bounce.
Of course, practice is essential. But once the technique is mastered, curling your hair will be child’s play!
