How often should you wash your hair?

This question has been asked for decades, but opinion remains divided. Let’s try to sort out truth from falsehood.

WHY, IN FACT, DO WE WASH OUR HAIR?

The scalp contains sebaceous glands that secrete sebum, a natural protector against irritations. Shampooing effectively removes any impurities or excess sebum from the scalp. However, some claim that overly-frequent washing can disrupt sebum production balance.

WHERE DOES THIS MYTH COME FROM?

The shampoos of yesteryear were so harsh that they are now compared to a stripper. Of course, they instantly gave the hair a clean look. But the scalp was attacked and responded by secreting even more sebum, creating exactly the opposite effect to the one sought by shampooing.

The new generation of shampoos offers softer, advanced formulas to meet specific needs. We’ve come a long way from the old abrasive products!

WHAT’S RIGHT FOR ME?

Excessive washing can accentuate sebum production, disrupt the scalp’s pH balance and dry out the hair fibre. That said, shampooing is necessary. Washing frequency will vary depending on your hair type.

  • Oily hair: Shampooing every second day is very possible! Sebum production will regulate itself naturally. Use a clarifying cleanser weekly to eliminate excess sebum and other impurities.
  • Dry hair: Shampooing once a week could be beneficial to you. Try an ultra-gentle shampoo to maintain the hair’s hydration level.
  • Normal hair: Shampooing twice a week is sufficient! For healthy hair, complete your daily routine with a no-rinse moisturizer.
  • Coloured hair: Colouring fades with shampooing. It is thus recommended that you wash your hair only when necessary. But it is essential to shampoo coloured hair.

In all cases, daily washing is not recommended.

HOW TO REDUCE WASHING FREQUENCY?

Some simple tricks will optimize your shampooing and reduce sebum production. For example, rinsing your scalp with fresh water will leave your hair shiny and your scalp will be protected. Let your hair dry naturally as often as possible. Clean your hairbrush to get rid of the residue stuck between the bristles. Lastly, a good dry shampoo will work miracles in extending how long you go between shampoos.
