Q&A
It’s a fact: hair doesn’t produce sebum, only the scalp does. Many factors can make hair look oily (fine hair, natural increase in the production of sebum, improper hair care, etc.).
Let’s take a look at the habits to change and the products that can help you.
Leave your hair alone!
Resist the urge to touch your hair. Oils on our fingers transfer to hair and make it look dirty. During the day, if you must get the knots out, only brush the lengths, not the roots. This way, you’ll keep sebum production and distribution to a minimum.
Rock the shower cap
Surprisingly, using shampoo too frequently can be a bad thing. Shampooing more often than necessary can lead to a dry scalp. The result? The body produces even more oil to compensate for skin dryness. So, with that in mind, choose a mild purifying shampoo that meets your specific needs.
Our suggestions:
- Matrix Biolage Scalp Sync Cooling Mint Shampoo
- Ouidad Ready, Set Clean Scalp + Hair Rinse
- Rene Furterer Curbicia Regulating Shampoo
Conditioner should never be applied to roots! And remember: ‘Less is more’. Start by concentrating the conditioner on the ends of the hair, then spread it to the lengths. Finally, make sure to completely rinse off the product.
Our suggestions:
- Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Conditioner
- Pureology Hydrate Sheer Conditioner
- Rene Furterer Volumea Volumizing Conditioner
For very fine hair, try a leave-in conditioner such as these from Uniq One, Kenra or Sexy Hair. These types of products are lighter, so they won’t weigh down your hair.
Working out
If you’re into sports, shampooing less frequently might be a challenge. After a good workout, we suggest rinsing your hair to remove sweat and then air-drying or blow-drying your hair. A quicker option is to blow-dry your hair on the cool or warm setting immediately after working out. The Hot Tools Black Gold One Step detachable Blowout is ideal, as it’s infused with purifying charcoal that eliminates odours.
The (not-so-)secret weapon
Another effective choice is a good dry shampoo. It can be sprayed on clean hair to keep it from looking oily or between shampoos to absorb excess sebum. It’s also excellent for adding volume and texture to hair.
Just be careful not to overuse it. Also, make sure you add a clarifying shampoo to your routine to completely eliminate residues on the scalp. To learn more about dry shampoo, we invite you to read our article on the subject.
Our suggestions:
- Alterna Another Day Dry Shampoo
- Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo
- Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo Light Tones / Dark Tones
All of these habits are easy to fit into your hair care routine. You should see a major improvement in no time.
