Q&A
You love the look of a fresh, vibrant colour but want to avoid the hassle of constant retouches or visits to the salon? Here’s what could cause premature fading of your hair colour.
HAIR DYES
The type of product used plays a key role in the longevity of your colour. Semi-permanent colourings and toners are designed to last just a few weeks. A permanent hair colour, as its name indicates, will offer permanent results.
But why? The first product type will only deposit the pigment on the cuticle, while the second type penetrates the hair fibre to permanently modify its structure.
Peroxide volumes (10, 20, 30, 40) offer varied coverage levels. Did you know that the choice of volume will also have an impact on the colouring’s longevity? To learn more on this subject, we invite you to consult our article entitled How to choose your peroxide?
APPLICATION TECHNIQUES
Here are five simple techniques to integrate into the colouring process to ensure a long-lasting result:
- Before application: Use a clarifying shampoo to remove mineral deposits, product build-up and other impurities. The hair is then ready to receive the pigments.
- Wait time: Contrary to what one might think, leaving the product in longer will not extend colour hold. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely for best results.
- Emulsify before rinsing: You will thereby allow the pigments to penetrate the hair fibre and be better absorbed before sealing the cuticle.
- Hair-bonding treatments: This type of hair care is not only good for your hair’s health, it also extends colour hold. Bond restorers act as a protective barrier on the hair’s surface to lock in the pigments. The result: a long-lasting, vibrant colour!
- After application: If possible, wait three days before washing your hair. The cuticle can take up to 72 hours to close. By waiting this amount of time, you will ensure good fixation in the hair fibre.
DAILY CARE
When shampooing, water temperature can alter colour retention. Very hot water opens the cuticle, speeds up the fading process and dries the hair. A sulfate-free cleanser is essential for gentle cleanse and to maintain colour vibrancy. Also, incorporate dry shampoos into your routine to space out shampooing sessions.
Occasionally, apply a pigmented mask to revive dull colour and restore shine.
HAIR FIBRE HEALTH
Prioritize hair care products containing antioxidant ingredients. They protect against external aggressors like UVA and UVB rays.
As explained in detail in this article, it’s absolutely necessary to lower the temperature of heat styling tools! Like hot water, hot tools open the cuticles. So, reduce use of artificial heat, use a good heat protectant and adjust the temperature to the appropriate level.
