Q&A
Are you familiar with facial exfoliation? This technique allows for removing dead skin cells that can cause irregular texture and discoloration. Exfoliation also facilitates skincare absorption in the epidermis, brightens the complexion and prevents clogged pores. If you aren’t already exfoliating, you should seriously consider incorporating this step into your routine.
There are two types of exfoliants: physical and chemical. Continue reading to learn which type is better suited to you.
Physical exfoliants
Physical exfoliants also called scrubs, come in the form of liquid, gel or cream containing varied particles. These will immediately remove dead cells and polish the surface of the skin. For some people, physical exfoliants can be too harsh.
Our recommendations:
- Baxter of California Facial Scrub – Exfoliant
- Clayton Shagal Exfoliant Bamboo and Honey (Pro member exclusive)
- Nelly De Vuyst Gommage BioTense
Chemical exfoliants
Chemical exfoliants, also called peelings, are acids that react with the skin to dissolve cells and impurities. The word “acid” may sound alarming, but fear not! In a controlled concentration, this type of product offers more uniform results than physical exfoliation. Here are the groups of chemical exfoliants:
- AHA (alpha hydroxy acid): This group acts primarily on the surface to treat dry skin and reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation
BHA (beta hydroxy acid): This type of acid penetrates the skin deeply to reduce blackheads. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it an ideal product for acne-prone skin, blocked pores and even for treating wrinkles, fine lines and dark spots.
PHA (poly hydroxy acid): It is slow acting; thus, this category is suited to sensitive skin or skin vulnerable to irritation.
Our recommendations:
- Baxter of California Skin Concentrate BHA serum
- Clayton Shagal AHA Exfoliating Mask
- Dermalogica Clear Start FlashFoliant
How to use them?
It is recommended you closely follow the manufacturer’s instructions. You wouldn’t want to damage your delicate skin! Depending on the product’s strength, weekly or even daily use may be recommended. Pay special attention to any adverse reactions. If your skin is stinging or burning, rinse immediately!
After using an exfoliant, it is very important to protect the epidermis through proper hydration and the use of sunscreens.
You will quickly see an improvement in your skin’s texture, an even tone and you’ll have a bright complexion.
