Serum or Oil: How to Choose?

Some people confuse hair oils and serums, yet, these two products meet different hair care needs. Let's consider their respective qualities.

Serum

Often silicone-based, this product type forms a protective layer around the hair fibre. This barrier prevents damage caused by external stressors or heat. Since it does not penetrate the hair, serum is an excellent ally in fighting frizz, flyaways, and humidity.

Using a serum adds shine and a healthy appearance to your hair.

How to use: Apply a very small amount on clean, damp hair, from roots to ends.

Oil

Hair oils are made from plants, herbs and even fruit extracts. They moisturize and smoothe the hair fibre while making it easier to manage. Like the serum, the oil protects from heat and enhances shine.

This type of product has the advantage of being absorbed instead of just staying on top of the hair. This means it will have an impact on the health of the hair while enhancing its appearance.

How to use: Apply a small amount to damp hair from the lengths to the ends, making sure to distribute evenly. The oil may also be used as a finishing treatment to add shine.

How much do I need?

It may seem as though using an oil or serum might have the disadvantage of weighing down the hair. However, there are a variety of very light products on the market which meet the needs of fine hair.

Even so, it's best to exercise restraint. The bottles are usually small but designed to last for months and months! A small amount is enough for all the hair. Naturally, coarser and thicker hair will require a few more drops.
