Q&A
Getting a tanned complexion safely is possible with self-tanning products. With the new technologies and the multitude of options on the market, the days orange skin was acceptable are long gone. Nonetheless, their use can prove challenging and the results can be questionable!
Here are our tips for a successful self-tanner application.
The day before
In the shower, exfoliate your skin to remove all the dead skin cells, paying particular attention to your elbows, knees and feet. If you shave, now is the time to do it.
Next, apply a non-oily hydrating lotion that the skin will absorb completely. Be very generous on the driest areas.
When applying
Now begins the tanning operation! Reapply a small quantity of hydrating lotion to the dry areas and wait a few minutes before continuing.
You should have the following items ready to use:
- Self-tanner: Choose a tinted formula for a uniform, streak-free result.
- Gloves: Contrary to microfibre mittens, which soak up part of the product, this option allows for applying the product without absorbing it. Plus, you avoid unsightly stains on your palms.
- Large make-up brush: Use a brush for your face, ears and neck. Tiktok tutorials even suggest semi-permanent “contouring” by applying the self-tanner only on the contour of your face and under your cheekbones.
- Cotton swabs: Remove excess product at the hairline and on your eyebrows using a moist cotton swab.
- Towel: Wipe your palms with a damp towel.
For problem areas (feet, knees, elbows), use just a bit of product. And don’t forget to apply it between your toes!
When it’s time to tan your hands, remove your gloves. With the brush, spread the self-tanner on the back of your hands. Position your fingers as if holding a ball, then move the brush over and between them.
After applying
Wait until your skin is no longer sticky, then put on loose-fitting clothes. If you want a darker tan, let the product act over several hours, even overnight.
Self-tanner and dry skin don’t mix well at all. It’s therefore essential to hydrate your skin daily to extend your tan. Gradual tanning lotion is ideal for touch-ups and reviving your complexion.
